Roy delighted as Coronation Street legend stages a very welcome return

Roy Cropper (David Neilson) is utterly elated by the return of Evelyn Plummer (Dame Maureen Lipman) to Coronation Street next week as the long-time friends are finally reunited.
Maureen previously departed the cobbles to move into student accommodation after securing a place studying law at Manchester University, after best friend Roy encouraged her to pursue her passion.
The storyline was written in to accommodate Maureen’s break from the show.
The actress described it as a ‘gap year’, and explained that Evelyn would be ‘in and out’ so that the actress could ‘have a bit of a life’.

She last appeared on screens back in March following daughter Cassie Plummer’s (Claire Sweeney) expulsion from the Barlow’s and the wider community, following her campaign of drugging Ken Barlow (William Roache) to continue her employ as his carer.
Sleeping rough and tempted by drugs as part of Tracy Barlow’s (Kate Ford) revenge plot, Cassie was at her lowest ebb.
Willing to abandon her studies to help her wayward daughter, Evelyn was able to return to university upon reuniting Cassie and Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall)

Roy is heartened to be reunited with his bestie when he bumps into her at the hospital, where he’s having his bad back checked out.
Although fans are sure to be chuffed at the return of the acid-tongued force of nature, it does beg the question:
What has brought Evelyn back to the cobbles this time? And how long is she planning to stay?
