Coronation Street star Peter Ash said he felt 'sad' as he opened up on his character Paul Foreman's harrowing storyline and his upcoming exit
Coronation Street star Peter Ash has opened up about his character’s heart-wrenching exit, as Paul Foreman faces a tragic end.
The 39-year-old actor, who has portrayed fan-favorite Paul since his debut in Weatherfield in 2018, has been at the center of some of the soap’s most challenging storylines. Now, as Paul battles motor neurone disease, viewers are grappling with the harsh reality that his time is running out.
During a recent appearance on This Morning, Peter shared his thoughts on leaving the long-running ITV series. Speaking to hosts Rochelle Humes and Dermot O’Leary, he expressed a deep sense of sadness: “It’s a bit of a double-edged sword, really. You’re grateful for this incredible storyline, but it’s hard because you know it means the end is near.”
Reflecting on his imminent departure, Peter added: “I have mixed feelings—sad to leave because it’s a great place to work, and I’ve made so many wonderful friends. But I also feel incredibly honored to have been part of such an important story.”
In a recent episode, Coronation Street aired a special that highlighted the challenges of living with motor neurone disease. The episode, which aired on July 26, depicted a poignant day in the life of Paul and his husband Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank), as they spent time creating lasting memories together.
Billy took Paul on one final outing, revisiting the places that held special meaning for them, including the church where they got married. The episode was filled with emotion, particularly as Paul made the life-altering decision to end his life that day. Using his tablet to communicate, he shared his wishes with Billy.
Initially, Billy was shocked and couldn’t bring himself to help. However, he ultimately agreed to support Paul’s decision. Their plans were unexpectedly interrupted when Chesney arrived with a family emergency, asking Billy and Paul to babysit his children. The overnight stay of the kids put a pause on Paul’s original plan.
The following day, Paul chose to delay his decision, giving both him and Billy more precious time together. However, fans are speculating that another character might play a pivotal role in Paul’s fate, with many pointing to Todd Grimshaw.
In discussions on a Coronation Street fan page, one viewer suggested, “Anyone else think Todd will be the one to set Paul free?” Another viewer agreed, saying, “I think he will.” A third added, “ABSOLUTELY 100%.” Meanwhile, others hope that Billy won’t be left to deal with the emotional aftermath alone.
