Coronation Street legend misses call about ill girlfriend – while he’s with his ex
The news that Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan) and Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) had split up was hot gossip in Monday (September 23)’s Coronation Street – and Sean Tully (Antony Cotton) didn’t waste any time in letting Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) know what had happened.
Daniel immediately made his way to the Rovers to find Daisy, and they sat down to talk about the break-up. Daisy talked about how she and Ryan had been bonded together by their shared experience of being involved in the acid attack. Daniel sensed that there was something more, and Daisy admitted that Ryan had believed that she was still in love with Daniel.
‘The infuriating thing is, he’s right,’ she told her former fiancé – who was gobsmacked by the revelation.
Daisy was hoping that Daniel would say that he also still had feelings for her, and in fact he did tell her that he still cared about her. But he said that ‘feelings change’ – and insisted he was with Bethany now.
Ironically, while this conversation was going on Daniel was ignoring repeated calls from Turkey, where Bethany is currently working on a writing job.
Later he finally took a call, but it wasn’t Bethany, as expected, but a hospital. They said that Bethany was in intensive care.
A panicked Daniel was soon breaking the news to Bethany’s mum Sarah (Tina O’Brien), and the two made plans to fly to Turkey as soon as possible. There was a problem though, as Sarah’s passport will expire soon, meaning she wasn’t allowed to fly to Turkey and Daniel had to make the journey alone.
When he got there, there was worrying news. Bethany was in surgery and was being treated for sepsis and a perforated bowel.
None of this made any sense to Daniel and Sarah, as Bethany had been perfectly fine when she left Weatherfield. But the doctors told Daniel that the problems were a result of botched liposuction. The aftermath of Bethany’s decision to have cosmetic surgery abroad will see her life change dramatically, as she’s told she will have to have a stoma bag for the rest of her life. This storyline has been developed with the help of Colostomy UK and their marketing and campaigns manager, Giovanni Cinque, commented:
‘Even though public awareness has grown considerably over the last few years thanks to a number of celebrities revealing they have had surgery, the challenges that the 200,000 plus people living with a stoma in the UK face are less known, which means that we as a society and as individuals are not as aware as we should be of the choices that we can make to positively improve their quality of life.
‘We really hope that Bethany’s journey will go a long way in helping to educate the audience, and thus help to create a more Stoma Aware UK.’
Bethany’s immediate future sees surgeons battle to save her life, while Daniel struggles on discovering that Bethany’s travel insurance means that she won’t be allowed to leave the country until her medical bills are paid – leaving her family wondering how they’ll be able to get her back to Weatherfield.
