ITV pulls Coronation Street from the schedules – but not for the reason you think

We’re sorry to say – Coronation Street has been dropped from ITV schedules tonight.

…but for once, it’s not football coverage taking it from the airwaves.

The edition that was due to air has actually been shunted for this year’s National Television Awards, which is hosted by Joel Dommett.

Coronation Street is up against rivals Emmerdale, EastEnders, Hollyoaks and Casualty for the best serial drama award, with a number of soap stars also nominated for best serial drama performance.

Peter Ash, who played Paul Foreman, has been nominated alongside his co-star, Roy Cropper actor David Neilson.

This would be a huge scoop for Peter, whose character passed away in Monday’s episode following a tragic motor neurone disease diagnosis.

During the 18 months that the story played out, we saw his condition steadily grow worse – first losing his mobility, and later struggling to speak.

There’s set to be further heartbreaking scenes ahead, as after racing through the streets to be by his side, Paul’s husband Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) had no idea that his beloved had already slipped away.

As Billy stopped for breath, he picked up the phone and asked to speak with his partner. Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove), thinking she was doing the right thing, told him that Paul was still alive and listening.

Unfortunately you’ll have to wait until Friday to see what happens next.

Billy wakes up on the sofa and stares at Paul’s empty wheelchair and is hit with the sad reality that life now goes on. Tensions are running high amongst the family, but can they pull together amongst the sadness?

Elsewhere, Tracy (Kate Ford) makes a decision over her future with Tommy (Matt Milburn), and Tyrone (Alan Halsall) worries when his children Ruby and Dorin go missing from No. 9’s back yard.

Nick (Ben Price) has some news about cult leader Rowan (Emrhys Cooper), whilst Lisa (Vicky Myers) reckons she’s found the key to put Joel (Calum Lill) behind bars.

The NTAs kickstart at 8pm, with EastEnders’ Diane Parish and Angela Wynter, alongside Emmerdale’s Eden Taylor-Draper also in the best serial drama performance category.
