You’d be forgiven for thinking that after more than three decades portraying one of Summer Bay’s most beloved characters, Irene Roberts, Lynne McGranger would finally be ready to put her feet up and take a well-earned rest. But nothing could be further from the truth.

Since joining Home and Away in 1993, McGranger has cemented herself as an icon of Australian television. Her portrayal of Irene — a no-nonsense, fiercely loyal friend and mother figure with a troubled past — has made her a firm favourite among fans worldwide. And while many might assume that after 33 years in the same role she’d be ready to retire, McGranger herself insists she’s only just getting started.

In a recent interview, the actress shared that her passion for acting and her love for the character keep her motivated. “Irene has been such a big part of my life for so long,” she said. “She’s been through so many ups and downs, and in many ways, she’s grown alongside me. As long as they keep writing good stories for her — and as long as the audience still wants to see her — I’ll keep showing up. Why stop now?”

Indeed, McGranger’s enthusiasm remains infectious. Over the years, she’s tackled countless challenging storylines, from addiction and abuse to heartbreak and redemption. For many viewers, Irene’s resilience has been a source of inspiration, and McGranger takes great pride in being able to give voice to such real and relatable struggles.

The actress also credits her continued energy to her loyal fanbase, who have supported her through thick and thin. “When people come up to me and tell me how much Irene has meant to them, how her storylines have helped them in their own lives… that’s when you realise it’s all worth it,” she explained.

Far from slowing down, McGranger has hinted at even more dramatic plots to come for Irene. “Oh, you haven’t seen anything yet,” she teased with a smile. “There are some surprises in store that even shocked me when I read the scripts. It’s going to be quite the ride.”

At 71, Lynne McGranger shows no signs of fatigue — on or off-screen. In fact, she seems more determined than ever to keep bringing warmth, humour and heart to Summer Bay for years to come.

So while others may dream of retirement, for Lynne McGranger, the best may be yet to come. And fans of Home and Away wouldn’t have it any other way.
