This article contains spoilers for tonight’s episode of Coronation Street, which airs at 9pm on ITV1, or can be streamed now ITVX.

Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown) has froze in horror after learning a relative has been critically injured.

It’s been quite a busy week for the clan, in the wake of her traumatic labour.

Feeling usual, she consulted a number of medical professionals who all passed her pain off as normal.

After being seen by a doctor, they confirmed that she had pre-eclampsia, and needed to have an emergency caesarean section as soon as possible.

The midwife refused to accept that the surgery was causing her further agony, and it wasn’t until she passed out that the matter was taken seriously.

It was revealed that she had suffered a haemorrhage and doctors had had to perform a hysterectomy to save her life. This meant that her other predicament – whether or not to keep baby Laila – was intensified by the fact she would be unable to carry a child again.

She initially planned to give her baby up for adoption, until brother James (Jason Callender) arrived home to Weatherfield from his new life in the US and proposed that he and partner Danny Tomlinson (Dylan Brady) could take on the responsibility.

Whilst she was initially appalled at the idea, she learnt that the pair had considered adopting in the past and would give the youngster a comfortable upbringing.

Unfortunately, that plan could be blown out of the water following some tragic news in today’s episode.

Dee-Dee woke up and had decided to discharge herself from hospital, against the advice of doctors.

Her dad Ed (Trevor Michael Georges) then arrived, but broke some devastating news. Danny had been injured in a car accident, and James had rushed home to be with him.

This left them with quite a dilemma – as whilst he was away, Ed would have to take full care of Laila.

Dee-Dee wondered whether she could be under the same roof as the baby, and within hours her dad had to rush off to work and leave mother and daughter alone.

The situation only intensified when Laila began to cry, and Dee-Dee was at a loss with what to do.

Friends Alya Nazir (Sair Khan) and Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) called by to settle the baby, and to comfort their friend who was clearly going through a lot.

Alya offered to help support a medical negligence case concerning Dee-Dee’s treatment, but that didn’t solve her other problem.

What will happen with Laila now that James has had to return to America?
