Coronation Street star Luca Toolan has hit back at the fan backlash surrounding his character, Mason Radcliffe.
Luca, who portrays the menacing bully Mason on the ITV soap, has recently returned to the show after serving time for carrying a knife. His unexpected comeback has naturally caused alarm for Dylan, Liam, and their concerned parents. Speaking out about the negative reactions he’s received, Luca exclusively told The Mirror: “I haven’t faced anything too harsh yet—everyone’s nice in real life. Online, you might get a bit of stick, but in person, people are lovely. I feel pretty lucky.”
Reflecting on his experience working on the iconic show, Luca shared how surreal it feels to be part of something so ingrained in Manchester’s culture. “I watched Corrie as a kid; it’s woven into the fabric of the city. Being even a small part of that legacy is truly an honor. Even now, a year in, I sometimes have to pinch myself when I’m walking down the street. It’s like, what the hell is going on!”
As Mason begins interacting more with others on the Cobbles, questions arise about whether he might be sticking around for the long haul. Luca hinted at the possibility, saying: “Mason was pretty isolated in terms of who he interacted with before, but now I’m working with a lot of people on the street. They’re giving me some grief on the show.” When asked if his character’s return could be permanent, he added: “I’m taking it day by day. For now, it looks like I’ll be here for the foreseeable future.”
Luca acknowledged that his character has undergone some changes since his sentence, but when asked if Mason is a completely different person now, he responded: “A little bit. Corrie hasn’t taken the unrealistic route of turning him into an angel overnight. The focus is more on exploring why he is the way he is, and you see him struggling with his instincts. It’s been really fascinating to portray and it’s pushing me as an actor. Mason is now a three-dimensional character, not just a bully. I hope people will find his vulnerability interesting to watch.”
