ITV Coronation Street star reveals why bosses axed ‘killer’ stunt storyline

Coronation Street has a long history of dramatic storylines

Coronation Street

A former Coronation Street star has revealed a massive stunt that was ultimately scrapped due to its high cost. The ITV soap is known for its shocking scenes, such as the terrifying minibus crash in 2015 and the disastrous tram derailment during the 50th-anniversary special in 2010.

More recently, in 2022, the show used innovative technology for Kelly Neelan’s (played by Millie Gibson) dramatic exit. However, it appears there was once an even more ambitious storyline planned – one so costly it had to be abandoned, reports the Express.

Daran Little, who has written numerous episodes of both Coronation Street and the BBC’s EastEnders, shared details about the proposed plot online. He said: “You wanna blow your mind further? At one stage we planned to flood the street – like a massive flood that killed people and had everyone sat on their roofs but it was way too expensive.”

The plan was for the flood to link to the 2021 sinkhole disaster in Weatherfield. The saga commenced in 2020 when a perilous sinkhole emerged in the Platt’s backyard, setting off a series of dire events that wreaked havoc, fear, and fatalities throughout the beloved street.

Fans were amazed by the revelation, with one saying: “Nah I would love to see this! It needs to happen!”

A second said: “Love this! Now I can’t stop picturing Emily Bishop on her roof like Noah from Noah’s ark.” A third said: “Oh wow, this stuff should have happened.”
