Toyah receives devastating diagnosis in Coronation Street – and Leanne’s reaction floors her

Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) was anxious in Monday’s (July 22) episode of Coronation Street as she made her way to the hospital to discover whether she has cancer.

A few weeks ago, after sleeping with Nick (Ben Price), Toyah took a pregnancy test and it was positive. After a hellish few weeks, Toyah was pleasantly surprised by the news and relished in the prospect of her and Nick becoming parents.

Sadly though, Toyah then ended up in hospital and was told by a doctor the test was actually a false-positive. She discovered there’s a chance she might have ovarian cancer, and the pregnancy test wasn’t accurate because the illness altered it.

Toyah then had a scan and tonight, she went to the hospital for the results.

Prior to this though, Toyah was once again focused on The Institute. After finding an article that detailed Rowan’s (Emrhys Cooper) criminal history, Toyah told Leanne (Jane Danson) to confront him about it.

Sitting down in the Bistro, Leanne presented Rowan with the article and wanted answers. To her surprise, Rowan said every single part of that article is true.

He then proceed to completely manipulate Leanne by telling her the version of him who committed theft isn’t the one she’s looking at now. Rowan said that he changed his name to represent being a completely different person, and Leanne bought every single word.

As Leanne relayed this to Nick and Toyah, they were frustrated and exhausted. Toyah then decided to slip away for her hospital appointment alone, unable to deal with her sister.

There, as Toyah waited, she was touched when Nick arrived and sat beside her.

Eventually, Toyah and Nick sat down to speak to the consultant. He revealed that Toyah has germ cell ovarian cancer, will need an operation and might need chemotherapy afterwards.

As Nick and Toyah returned home, they bought themselves some time by enjoying a cake in the café. When they got back to the flat, Toyah told Leanne that Nick had gone with her for support, and then revealed her diagnosis.

At first, Leanne broke down in tears and hugged Toyah. Afterwards though, her warped view on reality as a result of Rowan’s cult saw Leanne argue her sister’s negativity and past trauma have impacted her physical health.

While burying trauma instead of confronting it can impact one’s physical health, it cannot give someone cancer, which Nick and Toyah were quick to reiterate.

As Toyah departed to her room, Leanne sat down with Nick and apologised for her behaviour. She said she’d tone down talking about The Institute, and that she loves him very much.

When Toyah returned, she announced some concerning news to Nick and Leanne.

Clearly worried about the chemistry between her and Nick, Toyah said she would be attending her hospital appointments all alone. She doesn’t want them to ask Toyah about her cancer, because she believes Nick and Leanne should be focusing on fixing their relationship.

It is a worrying development, but will Nick allow Toyah to face this ordeal on her own?
