Lisa Bluder, Caitlin Clark’s Former Coach, Makes Waves Following Indiana Fever’s New Hire

The Indiana Fever recently made headlines with their significant front-office announcement, hiring longtime WNBA executive Amber Cox as their new Chief Operating Officer and General Manager. Cox, who previously held roles with the Phoenix Mercury, Connecticut Sun, and Dallas Wings, takes over from former GM Lin Dunn, who is transitioning to a senior advisor position with the franchise.

“I am excited to be joining the Fever during this historic time in the WNBA and grateful to Kelly Ferrell and Mel Reins for this opportunity,” Cox stated. “From the top down, there is a commitment to invest in the Fever to ensure the team’s continued growth and success. I look forward to contributing to a world-class experience for our fans and players both on and off the court.”

With Cox now leading the organization, fans are questioning the future of current head coach Christy Sides, who faced criticism throughout the 2024 WNBA season, particularly regarding her management of Caitlin Clark, the Fever’s No. 1 overall pick and 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year.

Several fans have suggested potential replacements for Sides, with names like former Iowa basketball coach Lisa Bluder emerging as popular options. One fan tweeted, “Please hire Lisa Bluder as your next head coach! Thank you and God bless.” Another expressed hope that Caitlin Clark would be able to set aside any optimism regarding changes under Sides, favoring Bluder or Cheryl Miller instead.

Bluder, who coached Clark throughout her record-breaking four years at Iowa, retired from coaching following Clark’s decision to enter the 2024 WNBA draft. In a heartfelt video message celebrating Clark’s Rookie of the Year award, Bluder expressed immense pride: “What an amazing accomplishment. Who would have thought that all those years ago back in Des Moines, Iowa, this would be the case? We knew we had something special in Caitlin, and the attention she brought to collegiate basketball has clearly translated into the WNBA. You worked for it; you deserve it. It’s an incredible honor, and we are so proud of you always.”
