Caitlin Clark suffers major setback as Indiana Fever loses key player before playoffs

Picked up a shoulder injury

Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever may be facing a challenge as they prepare for the WNBA playoffs with forward Temi Fagbenle potentially sidelined due to a right shoulder injury. There is no official word yet on how long Fagbenle will be out, but her status for the upcoming game against the LA Sparks on Wednesday is listed as questionable.

According to IndyStar’s Chloe Peterson, this marks Fagbenle’s third injury this season, further limiting her availability. Despite playing only 16 games this year for the Fever (17-16), Fagbenle has contributed solidly off the bench, averaging 6.5 points, 5 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in 19 minutes per game.

The timing of this injury is unfortunate for Indiana, as they’ve been building momentum post-Olympic break, going 6-1 and pushing into the sixth seed in the playoff race.

The Fever, who haven’t reached the postseason since 2016, are hoping to maintain their surge through a critical stretch of six consecutive home games before finishing their regular season against the Washington Mystics on September 19.

Fagbenle praised Clark

Fagbenle’s court time with rookie star Clark has been limited due to her injury setbacks. However, Fagbenle has spoken highly of Clark’s impact on the team. Back in May, she shared her thoughts on Clark‘s abilities, praising her for her leadership and playmaking skills, which have helped the Fever become more competitive.

“It’s really amazing, because we haven’t had many practices together. I’ve only had a few of those kind of point guards, who just know, sees the play before it’s happened.”
