Dr. Robert Horvat remained standing motionless beside the hospital bed.
Dr. Robert Horvat remained standing motionless beside the hospital bed.
The nurse still held the baby gently in her arms. Ivana, exhausted after twelve hours in labor, looked from the doctor to her newborn son.
‘Doctor?’ she asked softly. ‘Is there something wrong with my baby?’
Robert didn’t even seem to hear her.
He took a step closer and looked at the little face. His eyes lingered on a striking mark just below the boy’s left ear: a small, crescent-shaped mole.
The doctor tremblingly brought a hand to his mouth.
‘No…’ he whispered. ‘That’s not possible.’
Ivana felt her heart beating faster.
‘What can’t be done? Please tell me what is going on!’
Robert finally looked up. He tried to say something, but his voice broke.
What is the name of your child’s father?
Ivana froze.
She had heard this question dozens of times already. Each time, she had tried to keep her answer as short as possible.
‘Luka Horvat.’
The color disappeared from Robert’s face…………………
He gripped the edge of the bed as if he would otherwise fall.
‘Luka…’ he repeated. ‘Your son’s name is Luka Horvat?’
‘No,’ answered Ivana cautiously. ‘The father is named Luka. My son hasn’t been given a name yet.’
Robert closed his eyes.
When he opened them again, tears ran down his cheeks.
‘My God,’ he whispered. ‘So it happened after all.’
Ivana tried to get up, but the nurse placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
‘Doctor, you scare me,’ said Ivana. ‘Do you know Luka?’
Robert nodded slowly.
Luka is my son.
The silence that followed was deafening.
Ivana stared at him.
‘Your… son?’
‘Yes.’
But Luka never told me that his father was a doctor.
Robert lowered his head.
That doesn’t surprise me.
He asked the nurses if they could leave Ivana and the baby alone with him for a moment. One of them hesitated, but Ivana nodded. She wanted to answer. And this man seemed to know more than he dared to tell.
When the door closed, Robert pulled a chair to the bed…………..
‘Before I tell you anything,’ he said, ‘you must know that I do not hold you responsible for what my son has done.’
Ivana looked at him bitterly.
That is easy to say. You have no idea what it is like to be left pregnant by the man you thought loved you.
Robert accepted her words without defending himself.
You are right. I don’t know that. But I do know why Luka was so afraid of this child.
Ivana felt a cold shiver run down her spine.
Scared? He didn’t want a child at all?
Robert looked at the baby, who now lay peacefully in his mother’s arms.
Not because he didn’t want to become a father. But because he thought he would make the same mistake I once made.
He was silent for a moment before continuing.
Twenty years ago, my wife, Ana, lost our second child. It was a boy. He was born much too early and lived only a few hours.
Robert took a deep breath.
I was working that night. I had accepted an emergency surgery and wasn’t with my wife in time. When I finally arrived, it was too late.
His voice grew softer.
Ana never forgave me for that. Not really. She stayed with me, but something changed between us. And Luka… he was only eight years old then. He heard us arguing. He heard his mother crying. He thought his little brother had died because his father wasn’t there.
Ivana looked at her son’s little hands.
But that wasn’t his fault.
I know that. And deep down, Luka probably knows that too. But feelings of guilt don’t always listen to the truth.
Robert stroked his face with his hand.
‘When you told him you were pregnant, he panicked. He told me that he could never be a good father. I told him he was wrong. We argued. He accused me of ruining his life by always putting my work above my family.’
‘And then he left,’ whispered Ivana.
Robert nodded.
Yes. But there is something else.
He looked at the baby again. His eyes filled with tears once more.
That mole… my late son had exactly the same mark.
Ivana felt her breath catch.
You mean that my baby…
‘No,’ Robert interrupted her immediately. ‘I am not claiming that anything supernatural is going on. A mole can coincidentally be the same. But when I saw it, I remembered that night. I remembered the child I never got the chance to raise.’
He bowed his head.
And I realized that I might lose another grandson, even before I had ever met him.
Ivana looked at him for a long time. Then she asked the question that had been haunting her mind for minutes.
‘Why didn’t Luka just tell me what was wrong with him then?’
Robert had no answer.
Or maybe he did have one, but was ashamed of it.
‘Because he has been a coward,’ he said finally. ‘And because I let him believe for too long that we can only avoid our mistakes by walking away.’
Ivana looked at her son.
I don’t need him to tell me how to love my child. I got through nine months without him. I’ll be able to handle the rest as well.
Robert nodded respectfully.
I believe that.
He stood up and walked to the door. He stood there for a moment.
May I ask you something?
Ivana did not answer immediately.
‘What?’
Would you allow me to get to know my grandson? Not as the famous Doctor Horvat. Not as the father of the man who left you. But as a grandfather who wants to right a wrong.
Ivana felt her eyes sting.
She wanted to say no. She wanted to make him feel what it was like to be excluded.
But then she looked at her son.
He deserved no punishment for his father’s mistakes.
‘You may get to know him,’ she said finally. ‘But I don’t want any more lies. And if Luka ever comes back, he will first have to prove that he can be a father.’
Robert bowed his head.
I promise.
That evening he returned with a small blue blanket, carefully folded in his hands.
‘This one belonged to my first son,’ he explained. ‘Ana has kept it all these years. I thought it might be a good idea for your boy to have it.’
Ivana touched the soft fabric.
For the first time, she saw the doctor not as a man confronting her with a secret, but as a father who himself had lived with grief for years.
She accepted the blanket.
And then something unexpected happened.
Robert’s phone started vibrating.
He looked at the screen and froze again.
Luka called.
Robert answered, but said nothing.
On the other side, a restless voice was heard.
‘Dad? I heard Ivana is in the hospital. Is the baby here yet?’
Robert looked at Ivana. She heard the voice of the man who had left her seven months earlier and felt old pain resurface.
‘Yes,’ answered Robert. ‘Your son is born.’
A long silence fell.
Then Luka asked with a trembling voice:
‘Is he healthy?’
‘Yes.’
‘An Ivana?’
Robert looked at the woman in the bed.
She was strong enough to do everything alone. Something you weren’t strong enough to do with her.
Luka started crying on the other side.
‘I know. I know I’ve ruined everything. I want to see her. I want to see my son.’
Ivana stretched out her hand.
Give me the phone.
Robert handed it over without saying a word.
‘Ivana?’ Luka’s voice came immediately. ‘I’m sorry. I know I have no right to ask you anything, but please… let me see it.’
Ivana looked at her sleeping baby.
‘Luka, listen carefully. You can’t just come back now that you realize you’ve become a father.’
I know that.
You left me alone when I needed you most. I cried for nights on end. I worked while my body was exhausted. I was afraid of childbirth and there was no one to hold my hand.
On the other hand, it remained quiet.
‘I cannot promise you that I will ever forgive you,’ she continued. ‘But if you truly want to be a part of his life, you must stop running away. You must seek help for what you are carrying with you. And you must understand that your son is not a second chance to repair your past. He is a human being who will need you.’
‘I will do it,’ whispered Luka. ‘I swear it.’
Don’t say that to me. Show it.
She ended the conversation.
Robert said nothing. He just carefully placed the blue blanket over the baby.
Three days later, Luka stood at the door of Ivana’s hospital room.
He looked exhausted. His eyes were red and he was holding a small teddy bear that he had probably bought along the way.
When he saw his son in Ivana’s arms, he stood still as if his feet were stuck to the floor.
‘May I hold him?’ he asked softly.
Ivana looked at him for a long time.
Then she gently placed the baby in his arms.
Luka looked at the little face. The boy moved briefly, opened his mouth, and closed his little hand around his father’s finger.
Luke’s marriage.
He cried without hiding.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered to his son. “You deserve a better father than the man I am today. But I am going to try to become that man.”
Ivana did not believe that one visit could repair everything. She knew that trust took time and that some wounds would never completely disappear.
But that afternoon something happened that she had not expected.
Robert came in, sat down beside the bed, and gently took Ivana’s hand.
‘I cannot change the past,’ he said. ‘But I can ensure that my grandson grows up with people who show him what love truly means.’
Ivana looked at her son, at Luka, and at the older man who finally dared to face his grief.
For the first time in months, she didn’t feel completely alone.
Not because Luka had suddenly made up for everything.
Not because her pain had disappeared.
But because she understood that her son was not born to repeat an old tragedy.
He was born to begin his own story.
And that story would not be defined by his father’s mistakes, his grandfather’s grief, or the loneliness with which his mother had brought him into the world.
Because sometimes a family only truly begins to heal when someone finally decides to stop running away.
